Cephalosporins
Family Practice Physicians and various other Medical Providers throughout the United States prescribe and administer Cephalosporins more than all other antibiotics combined when treating a broad spectrum of pathogens. Because of its low toxicity, Ceftriaxone (Rocephin) is one of the most popular injectable cephalosporins used today. This third generation antibiotic is used to treat a wide variety of infections including the treatment of serious gram-negative and gram-positive bacterial infections and is also used as a prophylactic in some surgical procedures. Another popular cephalosporin used in outpatient settings is Cefazolin (Ancef). This first generation antibiotic is most commonly used as a prophylactic to prevent infection post surgery but is also used in the treatment of dermatological, urinary tract, pulmonary and GI infections.
